A hilarious and poignant documentary examining the history of
homosexuality through the history of cinema. Directors Rob Epstein
and Jeffrey Friedman have amassed an impressive collage of clips
and images from hundreds of films-many of which were misunderstood
at the time of their release. Narrated by a serious Lily Tomlin,
the film is an entertaining and fascinating look at cinema's
historical treatment of the issue. First in the series The Celluloid
Closet; introduced by critic Anthony Allison. Rated R, 102 minutes.
February 11

Steve Buscemi gives arguably his best performance in Bill Sherwood's
touching drama. Centered around a couple played by Richard Ganoung
and John Bolger, the film works as a sort of time capsule for

the general consciousness. A funny and heartbreaking look at
a difficult time. Part of the Out of the Celluloid Closet series,
introduced by critic Anthony Allison. Not rated, 90 minutes.
Not recommended for children. This film is not available with
captions for the hearing impaired.

melodramatic. With a cast full of colorful characters, the film
is a memorable coming-of-age tale. Part of the Out of the Celluloid

90 minutes.

*Winchester Center Theater
*3130 S. McLeod - 455-7340
*7:00 p.m. - $3
Dan Futterman stars in John Shear's dark independent drama.
Atmospheric lighting and grainy digital video set the tone as
we are introduced to Charlie, a gay man in New York City dealing
with the loss of a loved one. The film is mysterious and edgy,
punctuated by surprising moments of revelation, as we slowly
learn the source of Charlie's sorrow and the reason for his
nihilism and desperation. Though not always easy to watch, it
is a fascinating look at solitude and depression. Part of the
Out of the Celluloid Closet series, introduced by critic Anthony
Allison. Rated R, 103 minutes.
March 10
*Big Eden (2000)

(Arye Gross), a gay New York City artist revisiting the fictional

weary of discussing his sexuality with townsfolk he's known
since childhood, but when he meets Pike (Eric Schweig), he
can't keep his feelings secret. The surprise comes when the
town tries to insure that Henry and Pike end up together.
A warm, intelligent film that works because its characters
are so likeable. Last in the Out of the Celluloid Closet series,
introduced by critic Anthony Allison. Rated PG-13, 114 minutes.
This film is not available with captions for the hearing impaired.

The famous jazz artist, Monk Montgomery,
founded the Las Vegas Jazz Society in 1975. His passion for
the arts and fellow musicians motivated him to acknowledge the
many accomplished musicians performing in Las Vegas night spots.
The Society also takes pride in establishing the Nevada Jazz
Orchestra, composed of some of the finest musicians. Nevada
Jazz Orchestra (NJO) is composed of 18 members and was created
to showcase the talented musicians performing in a series of
concerts each year.
Members support the LVJS and their jazz educational program
and scholarships offered at the Community College of Southern
Nevada in keeping jazz alive! One of the benefits of becoming
a member of the Las Vegas Jazz Society is the discounted price
on performances at local nightclubs.
Music Director, Harold Weller, and the
members of the Las Vegas Philharmonic are celebrating their
5th anniversary. Music lovers from the Las Vegas Valley have
been supporting the orchestra and many of the concerts this
season are predicted to have a "sold out" season.
The Las Vegas Philharmonic began on the 4th of July in 1998.
It launched the classical music scene in Las Vegas, which has
inspired a new cultural dimension for the residents in the Las
Vegas Valley. The Las Vegas Philharmonic is co-founded by Music
Director, Harold Weller, and Susan and Andrew Tompkins who have
been long-time supporters of the arts in Las Vegas.
In May of 1999, the Philharmonic achieved artistic credibility
with a stunning performance of the complex and demanding Gustav
Mahler's Second "Resurrection" Symphony. Civic leaders'
determination was instrumental in bringing about what is known
today as "The Las Vegas Philharmonic. Efforts to offer
quality musical performances were the driving force stemming
from their belief that southern Nevada needed and appreciated
The Las Vegas Philharmonic's music.
Internationally acclaimed guest artists have performed regularly
with the Las Vegas Philharmonic with a high level of excellence.
During the past three seasons, the Las Vegas Philharmonic Orchestra
has gone beyond their greatest expectations and has earned the
respect of their critics.
The Philharmonic has led by example in promoting the music arts
to more than 20,000 students in the Clark County School District
each year. Their dedication to inspire young musicians with
a cultural outreach program has been their top priority. The
Las Vegas Philharmonic has proven to the world that there's
a diverse cultural side to Las Vegas that deserves recognition.
